Although secondhand has always been around with people giving away their used goods for others to use as hand-me-downs, gifts, and donations, the first secondhand retail shops didn’t appear until the 1960’s. Secondhand is significant in that items that would have otherwise been thrown out and ending up in our landfills get used whether it be clothing you’ve outgrown, furnishing your house, or toys for your children to play with. Today, with many of us becoming concerned with our planet’s Eco-system, and all of us becoming aware of our downed economy, secondhand has become a household word.
People can no longer afford to buy as much at regular retail prices, and more and more of us are turning to secondhand stores. Everyone is looking for a great deal, more bang for your buck. With all of us “going green” secondhand, or “thrift”, shopping fits right in. The Thrift Shop no longer holds that embarrassing stigma, as it not only helps us save money it assists us in saving our environment.
You can bet you will always have fun inside a thrift shop! Depending upon your style you can be sure you will come across something that catches your eye. Whether it be last seasons designer trends, or maybe you are a vintage fashion enthusiast you are bound to come out with a bag full of unique finds for pennies on the dollar, and a huge smile on your face!
There are so many different kinds of secondhand stores today. Some are built for non-profit organizations like a local church, or charity, and operate solely on donations. Some are run under consignment and help you sell your used items for a percentage of the profit they bring. While others are privately owned by Eco-conscious people who have a knack for trade and profit, and many of the privately owned secondhand stores will buy used goods from customers for a little cash or store credit. With the growing popularity of secondhand goods you can even shop online from the convenience of your own home via online thrift shops, or through auction style bidding forums such as Ebay. No matter how they are set up, who owns them, or why most secondhand stores turn everyday used goods over to the rest of us for a fraction of the retail cost. So whether you are a looking to buy, sell, or trade secondhand is more popular than ever!
