Fashion Trending in an Alternative Direction!

Since the beginning, fashion trends have come and gone. With such a wide array of clothing designs to choose from today, we can take pieces from each era creating different styles by combining old favorites with new, putting a new spin on fashion trends from days gone by, and bringing them up to date. For awhile, we can call it our own, but, like everything that is genuinely awesome, it will be copied and eventually mass-produced. Then it’s on to the next best trend. The fashion industry is fast-paced and fabulous any way you look at it, and I like to look at it from an alternative fashion forward perspective!

As a young Punk Rocker, enthralled in fashion, I was combing every thrift shop in town for pre-owned items that I could nip, tuck, and morph into whatever I wanted. I, personally, didn’t pay attention to clothing labels, because it wasn’t about what I spent on my clothing, but what I looked like inside them. I didn’t have enough money to keep up with who made what anyway, but I knew I loved fashion! Now I own a unique Vintage Rockabilly Pin up & Punk Second-Hand store called Retro Kitten Apparel full of all things alternative and my love of fashion, thrifting, and affordability has found its way into my everyday life.

We’ve all seen it. The revival of the 60’s on the cover of every fashion rag, because a reputable clothing designer decided his Spring line’s theme was “Flower Power”. The next thing you know women everywhere are sporting brown suede fringed vests and moccasins complimenting loose-fitting bohemian blouses, an old faded pair of jean shorts, accessorized by a brown leather belt, and maybe a pretty hand-made flower headband. And there’s my favorite, Alternative fashion. With endless styles, genres, and sub-genres one can come up with some of the coolest fusions combining one with another. Just adding a few accessories and, before you know it, you’re outfit is headed in an entirely different direction!

Rock-N-Roll, of course, is the origin of a myriad of trends, cultures, and sub-cultures. We now have the luxury of what it really means to be hip. The Beatniks gave new meaning to the color black, art pop culture, coffee shops, and snapping. Mods brought the 50’s back on scooters. Skinheads gave the working class citizen something else to wear. Punks, well Punks just smashed stuff, but thousands of youths jumped in head first, and “Do It Yourself”! became cool once again. Kid’s like me shunned grandma’s dress patterns and went straight for a large sewing needle, some dental floss,  and a favorite music band’s clothing patch nipping and tucking virtually destroying the original design of what could be scavenged from the local thrift until it was wearable again. Goths glamourized darkness and mortality with theatrical black and white movie style. Pin up girls in their form-fitted sweater tops and high-waist shorts gave the girl next door a sexier image, and soon America was staring at Bettie Page in her darling underpants. Men in the military were absolutely thrilled! Then along came the combinations of these like Rockabilly, Psychobilly, and Steampunk. I am in absolute fashion heaven!

ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLES & SUB-CULTURES

There are many people leading alternative lifestyles, and many considerations to be made about what is an alternative lifestyle. In my opinion, an alternative lifestyle is a few alterations to the society you live in and what might be considered normal, or a mainstream point of view. An alternative lifestyle might be one’s cultural upbringing, or choice of traditions practiced and celebrations; nutritional choices, and the food you eat, or choose not to eat; sexual orientation and with whom you share your love; or appearance, the clothing you wear, or the way you decorate your body possibly with tattoos, or piercings (in many other areas of the body than the ear lobe). For some it is personal, freedom of choice, and for others it is something they feel they were born into, a calling in one form or another.

By the way, the term lifestyle was coined by the media mixing life and art together, thus life-style. I find that pretty cool. A fairly common alteration to one’s style of life is by dress. It is a common way for people to express themselves, through the type of clothing they wear, and most of us wear clothes on a daily basis (not you nudists though). Therefore, it is a pretty easy way to represent your alternative lifestyle, and it can be pretty fun expressing freedom of choice through your own personal style of dress. It isn’t hard to point out some of the alternative people we share our cities with, as their lifestyle choices, represented by the clothing they adorn, has not been adopted by society’s mainstream, or what is considered “normal”.

The earliest influx of the alternative life-style I’ve read was during the roaring 20’s with the flapper “movement”. As a symbol of freedom from oppression women were cutting their skirts short and their hair shorter; leading lives aloof of the heavy restrictions preceding. The “old days” were gone! Women were driving, cussing, having sex before marriage, and, oh yes, dancing. Women everywhere were jumping in with both feet, this was modern America.

Now, while we still have society’s standardized “norm”, there are many people leading alternative lifestyles. Sub-culture is abundant in America, and I am proud to be a part of the alternative life-stylists.

I have begun to compile a list of terms attached to styles of clothing, as this obviously fascinates me seeing as I own what I consider an alternative thrift store Retro Kitten Apparel. Please help me out by including any styles I may have left out. Please do not send any links as I will not open any links, and must search the style myself.

Classic Cars, Hot Rods, Kustom Culture Lifestyles

Retro Kitten Apparel is lucky enough to be based in Pismo Beach, California, one of the Central Coast’s most beautiful vacation spots and home of The Classic Annual Car Show. Since the early 1980’s, Just Cruzin’ Productions presents one of California’s largest, most reputable, car shows in the nation – The Classic. This 3-day event is traditionally held on Father’s Day weekend, but it’s more than just a great day for dad with hundreds of vendors, local shopping, wineries, and, of course, the beach! Families come from all over to see over 1,000 Hot Rods and Show Cars. With spectator’s reaching approximately 175,000 parking is limited, but the event is always a hit.

For Retro Kitten Apparel (RKA), The Classic is a week of entertainment watching the coolest cars rolling into town, and the most unique, vintage-themed characters who drive them. Being located just 4 blocks from the beach, we bring out the lawn chairs during twilight and enjoy the atmosphere of the Kustom Kulture lifestyle. RKA cater’s to these subculture connoisseurs who live for car shows and add a sense of nostalgia mixed with cartoonish horror to the event. Hot Rod’s and Pin-up girls go hand in hand in the Kustom Kulture lifestyle, a term coined in Southern California in the 1960’s by the people who built custom cars and motorcycles to describe artwork, vehicles, fashion, and hairstyles during the 1950’s.

In the 1950’s and 60’s, the scene greatly consisted of Greasers, Drag Racers, Skinheads, and Mods. These cats were visionaries, they were cool, and there was so much room for experimentation. Ed “Big Daddy” Roth is held in high regard as a pioneer in the Kustom Culture lifestyle. As one of the hot rod custom originators, Ed Roth was a custom car builder, pinstriper, artist, and cartoonist, and he is probably best known for inventing the hot-rod icon Rat Fink. Rat Fink was the anti-hero answer to Mickey Mouse with a big bulging belly, bloodshot eyes, and big yellow teeth. His character soon became the symbol of the Hot Rod and Kustom Kulture scene during the 50’s and 60’s.

Out of the 70’s, came Lowriders and Punks Rockers. As fashion and music evolved so did the cars becoming extremely inventive, and colorful. People who most likely would never walk side by side to gather together in the street were coming together with one common goal – cars! Rockabillys, Metaler’s and Scooterboys emerged in the 80’s, and sub-genres like Psychobillys came on the scene in the 90’s. All groups and subgroups contributed, customizing the lifestyle through art, music, movies, fashion, and, of course, cars.

That appreciates! It sure is. So maybe you wonder why it’s so cheap to buy it at Retro Kitten Apparel. Well here’s Lindsay’s story…

“I’ve dreamed of owning a store like this since I was twelve years old. I spent many a day browsing the rack’s of AmVet’s, Goodwill, & Salvation Army always coming up for air with my arms loaded full of fabulous finds that I could cut here and sew this on that. It wasn’t until I was in my 20’s that donation centers such as those actually meant something more than that to me, but Man that changed everything! Reduce, Re-use, Recycle ’cause this old planet might be begging us to. I wanted to make a difference and yet I needed to make cold hard cash so it wasn’t ’til about a decade later that I remembered this super cool Rock-n-Roll store I was enamored with so long ago called Valentino’s in Fresno’s (California) Tower District. That’s where all the Punks got their shoes when I was a kid, and if I was lucky I might get a band tee. In fact, I got my first two band tees from Valentino’s – G.B.H. and The Exploited, and not too very much longer The Cramps infamous yellow tee with the big faced creep, which was my favorite. I wonder who that guy was, cause it sure was Lux!…or maybe it was. Anyway, they had brand new Punk Rock clothes and shoes on one side and really old used clothes on the other. Vintage clothing you know, but I couldn’t appreciate it yet. Not ’til now, because you can buy Punk clothes everywhere now, and you couldn’t back then unless you lived in New York – not Fresno. I loved that store [Valentino’s], and this really neat couple owned it. I will never forget them. They were like Lux Interior and Poison Ivy from the Cramps. So cool! In fact, they are still there today! I wanted that store, that life, and, as fate would have it, I got a little bit of everything. I created this wonderful store where everything is second hand, whether it’s new with tags, or lightly worn and loved, and it all falls into a spicy little niche I like to call alternative. See, my husband passed away in 2007 and I’d lived a lifetime at 33 years old, so wise I was, too wise, sad eyes, and I was staring at our little one wondering how was I going to leave her one more day for 9 hours slaving away for “The Man” when a little ad scrolled across my computer that said, “Own your own small business today”. My thoughts raced as images of Valentino’s, thrift shops, goodwill and charity, punks kids on the streets, people lost, the economy broken by war for I still don’t know what and this world was dying, I was dying and then it came to me. Everything was silent. It was midnight and I owned my own small business today and I called it Gypsies Do It Better – well now I call it Retro Kitten Apparel.”.

She has worked hard burning the candle at both ends to make sure Retro Kitten Apparel is also the easiest online thrift shop to navigate through with simple sections laid out in each category listed down the side of the web store on every page so you can jump around adding this and that to your virtual shopping cart.
